Radio/TV
The Radio/TV Broadcasting program at Western Boone Jr.-Sr. High School is a 1 or 2 year program. Students become an employee of a TV station as this mostly hands-on class teaches all aspects of the Radio and TV Industry. An emphasis is placed on broadcast news and the production of students' own radio show, along with radio play-by-play. Students produce daily, LIVE newscasts along with the production of a music video and horror movie. Students work with aerial drones and GoPro cameras. Job shadowing and field trips are also a part of this class, and dual credit opportunities are offered through Vincennes University. Students are encouraged, but not required, to be on-air.
To view archived broadcasts from the class, check out the Radio/TV website!
Preschool
Western Boone County Community Schools recognize the importance of early childhood education in building a strong foundation for future academic success. Granville Wells and Thorntown Elementary Schools provide academic-based preschool programs for children who are four years of age by August 1st of the upcoming school year.
Students build and strengthen academic foundations through a blend of hands-on, play-based experiences and teacher-directed classroom instruction and activities. Preschool instructors use Pearson Education’s OWL curriculum as well as the Foundations to Indiana Academic Standards to design developmentally-appropriate classroom activities that make early learning fun. Instructors also collaborate with kindergarten teachers to determine essential early literacy and mathematics skills to ensure that students are ready for success when they enter kindergarten.
The community-based preschool programs follow the same school calendar as our K-12 program. Students attend a full school day, Monday through Friday. Children enrolled may ride the school bus to and from school.
Enrollment is open to students who turn four by August 1st of the enrollment year. Students who are five years of age by August 1st of the enrollment year may enroll in kindergarten. A birth certificate is required at the time of registration. We will accept resident and non-resident students.
Tuition for the community-based preschool programs require a non-refundable deposit of $230 due in June of the enrollment year and will be applied as the final month's tuition. Monthly tuition fees for August through April must be paid by the first day of each month, beginning in August. The monthly tuition for 2020-2021 is $230. A one-time supply fee also applies and covers the cost of all classroom-related supplies and materials for the year. Please contact either school's office any time during school hours for further registration information.

Blue Ribbon
Very few schools are recognized with this honor at a state level let alone a national level. Thorntown was asked by the State Department of Education to complete an application last winter. Once that was turned in and approved, they then had to meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). All of this became a reality this week as Thorntown Elementary School (1 of 8 Indiana schools) received a letter from the US Department of Education declaring them as a National Blue Ribbon School! On behalf of the School Board and our community, congratulations and we are very proud of your accomplishments! This is a special award not only for Thorntown Elementary School but for all of the Western Boone Schools! What a great place for students to learn!
The schools-254 public and 50 private-will be honored at an awards ceremony Nov. 15-16 in Washington, D.C. In the past 28 years, only 6,000 of America's schools have received this coveted award.
Blue Ribbon honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools whose students achieve at very high levels or have made significant progress and helped close gaps in achievement especially among disadvantaged and minority students. Each year since 1982, the U.S. Department of Education has sought out schools where students attain and maintain high academic goals, including those that beat the odds.
"Our nation has a responsibility to help all children realize their full potential. Schools honored with the Blue Ribbon Schools award are committed to achievement and to ensuring that students learn and succeed. Their work reflects the conviction that every child has promise and must receive a quality education." -Arne Duncan, Secretary of Education
